Hickory is our regular choice, but it isn’t the only good handle wood. Osage orange and purpleheart make good working handles too. Check the individual product’s recommended use before choosing a handle for your axe.
Choosing an exotic wood handle
Are these handles for working axes or wall hangers?
That depends on the wood and the handle length. Osage orange and regular purpleheart can be used for either. Some other woods and figured handles have different recommendations, especially at longer lengths. For example, our curly purpleheart product notes recommend longer handles for display. Read the notes on the product you’re considering before you choose.
How do I choose a handle that fits?
Replacement axe handles aren’t universal. Measure your axe head’s eye and compare it with the selected handle’s dimensions before ordering. Expect to shape the handle to fit your head. Our How To Hang An Axe guide walks through the fitting and hanging process.
