Choosing a short handle
Short axe and hatchet patterns: Compare our 12″, 15″, 15″ Straight, and 19″ handles.
Carving: Our 13.5″ Carvers Handle comes with an oval or octagonal grip.
Double bit: Look at our 13″ and 19″ double bit patterns.
Tomahawk: The 19″ Tomahawk Handle uses a tapered friction fit. Check the fit against your tomahawk’s eye before ordering.
A few things before you order
Oval or octagonal?
Most folks will be happy with an oval handle. Octagonal gives you a faceted grip, and one of our favorites is the carving handle in octagonal. Read our Octagonal VS Oval Handles article for more detail.
How do I check the fit?
Measure your axe head’s eye and compare it with the handle dimensions before ordering. Expect to shape the handle to fit your head. Our How To Hang An Axe guide walks through the process. Tomahawk handles use the tapered friction fit described above.
How is the handle length measured?
On our axe and hatchet patterns with a palm swell, the listed length measures the predicted finished handle length from the top of the eye to the lip of the swell. Extra wood on the eye and below the swell is there for fitting and can be left or trimmed. See our FAQs for more on measuring and fitting.
What are Grade 3 practice handles?
Our Grade 3 practice handles are for learning to hang an axe. They have structural flaws and aren’t covered by our handle warranty. Choose by eye size, not handle style. Practice handles do not include a wedge.
