Practice Handles

Grade 3 practice handles will have structural flaws such as knots, cracks, flat spots or bark inclusions that do not meet the specifications for our grade 1 or 2 handles. These handles are intended to practice hanging your axes, and hone your skills before spending the money and investment in time on one of our higher grade handles. You will find these handles categorized by eye size, not by handle style. Please read below to pick the eye size that will be large enough for the axe you wish to practice on. Our grade 3 handles are not covered by any warranty given their flaws and intended purpose. Practice handles do not include a wedge.

Great handle. Amazing work.

After my 7th axe,I finally learned the trick. Sometimes I have so much material to remove it’s takes quite some time. Using a draw knife and a few out tools they go in much easier now. Great handles.

Great handle

Excellent quality and price!
I chose the grade 2 axe handle for my application and I’m very pleased.Glad I found Hoffman Handles

The handle grain was perfectly verticle and tight. The handle was relatively thin, making it an ideal Boy’s Axe. I put an old 2# 5oz head on it and it balanced quite well. Finished with 600 grit and hand rubbed more linseed oil and it came out smooth and pretty. This is a very nice handle.

19” Octagon handle

Beautiful handle. Easy to set. Wish a model without oil was available. Wanted to add a darker dye to the wood for my son in the Marine Corps, but the set oil did not really let the stain to set.
Besides that, I will be getting more of these handles.

I am still trying to modify the handle to fit properly on my double bit axe head. Also, I did purchase some boiled linseed oil to treat the handle. I will revisit your tutorial to follow up on the proper methods. Take care, Kent

Well-crafted

This is a beautiful handle. My only wish is that it didn't come already soaked in boiled linseed oil - it makes it harder to remove material and complete the hang while maintaining a nice finish.

Great Wedge

Wedge is great but can be too thick for some applications.

Like it so far great feel and nice look so once I give some much needed TLC to few heads that deserve it and get them hung on handle so they can be used like intended I believe they look good with any head be it custom forged or store bought antique I plan to conduct more business in future at Hoffman handles

Great match for a tiny tassie.

The handle is awesome as always and I hung a 3.5lb Plumb Tassie on it. The build turned out exactly as I expected. Thanks Liam and the rest of the Hoffman team.

Perfect in Every Way

Installed on a vintage, 3.8# Plumb, National pattern. Eye fit was easy with plenty of material to work with. Kerf was cut precisely and the included walnut wedge was a nice touch. The shape and finish of the handle are wonderful to hold. and to swing. The Curvy design is ergonomically perfect and fits the aesthetic of the vintage axe head beautifully. I liked the Curvy handle so much I ordered a 28” for my next project.

Getting that kurf cut is definitely worth it. Convenient for people that don't have a band saw

My band saw is a bit wobbly over a 2 inch span, and my kerf cuts are sloppy. I liked the cuts and in fact dont know why you dont cut all your handles since i think you always end up wit a kerf nd wedge. Also, i really like the extra material on the butt….makes it nice to hammer when you are hanging and you can cut it later to make it custom.
What kind of lindseed oil do you coat the handles with? I have had trouble adding more lionseed oil or even sanding and putting on a slight stain…..it acts like a polyurthethane…,makes any new oil slightly bubble up? Just curious. Thanks..they are great handles.

Thank you, glad you're happy with it! To answer your questions...
- We offer handles without kerf cut in case you have an axe head that isn't straight, or isn't large enough to cover the kerf.
- We also offer handles that are not pre oiled as well. We soak handles in oil overnight to ensure they're saturated and oiled well. The fact that it isn't taking any new oils tells us it's protected properly!
Thanks again.
