We offer our premium American made handles in a #1 and #2 grade.

Our #1 grade guarantees straight, parallel grain orientation on your handle. Our #2 grade guarantees against cracks, irregularly twisted grain, and flaws that compromise the integrity of the handle but with grain orientation running non-parallel. We recommend our #1 grade for the experienced craftsman or for an axe you must highly depend on. Our #2 grade is still a fantastic choice for a working axe, watch our testing video here to see for yourself!

Our handles are elegantly and ergonomically sculpted, ending in a generous palm swell. The handle comes with a “cone-end” below the palm swell. This feature presents multiple benefits to the handle, such as protection against damage to the palm swell when fitting. Once fitted you have the option of leaving it as-is, cutting it off to the curvature of the swell or rounding it over to add a classy, vintage style bulb end. Your handle will come with 1 walnut wedge and a coat of boiled linseed oil for preservation.

  • We don’t recommend burning our handles as this can create cracks and may compromise the integrity of the handle. Any burned handles will not be guaranteed.

32" Double bit handle

I am still trying to modify the handle to fit properly on my double bit axe head. Also, I did purchase some boiled linseed oil to treat the handle. I will revisit your tutorial to follow up on the proper methods. Take care, Kent

Well-crafted

This is a beautiful handle. My only wish is that it didn't come already soaked in boiled linseed oil - it makes it harder to remove material and complete the hang while maintaining a nice finish.

Great Wedge

Wedge is great but can be too thick for some applications.

Very pleased with Hoffman handles.
The handles are beautiful. Love the palm swell. Fast shipping. A bit pricey but you get what you pay for I guess.

28" curvy

Like it so far great feel and nice look so once I give some much needed TLC to few heads that deserve it and get them hung on handle so they can be used like intended I believe they look good with any head be it custom forged or store bought antique I plan to conduct more business in future at Hoffman handles

Great match for a tiny tassie.

The handle is awesome as always and I hung a 3.5lb Plumb Tassie on it. The build turned out exactly as I expected. Thanks Liam and the rest of the Hoffman team.

Perfect in Every Way

Installed on a vintage, 3.8# Plumb, National pattern. Eye fit was easy with plenty of material to work with. Kerf was cut precisely and the included walnut wedge was a nice touch. The shape and finish of the handle are wonderful to hold. and to swing. The Curvy design is ergonomically perfect and fits the aesthetic of the vintage axe head beautifully. I liked the Curvy handle so much I ordered a 28” for my next project.

Beautiful

I was blown away by the craftsmanship of the handle. The walnut wedge was a very nice touch. Top notch

Kerf Cut

Getting that kurf cut is definitely worth it. Convenient for people that don't have a band saw

Kerf cut

The cut is perfectly timed to the handle.

Kerf Cut
Steve Loranger

My band saw is a bit wobbly over a 2 inch span, and my kerf cuts are sloppy. I liked the cuts and in fact dont know why you dont cut all your handles since i think you always end up wit a kerf nd wedge. Also, i really like the extra material on the butt….makes it nice to hammer when you are hanging and you can cut it later to make it custom.
What kind of lindseed oil do you coat the handles with? I have had trouble adding more lionseed oil or even sanding and putting on a slight stain…..it acts like a polyurthethane…,makes any new oil slightly bubble up? Just curious. Thanks..they are great handles.

Thank you, glad you're happy with it! To answer your questions...
- We offer handles without kerf cut in case you have an axe head that isn't straight, or isn't large enough to cover the kerf.
- We also offer handles that are not pre oiled as well. We soak handles in oil overnight to ensure they're saturated and oiled well. The fact that it isn't taking any new oils tells us it's protected properly!
Thanks again.

Hickory billet

I have an order for a new handle for an antique shipwright's adze. The billet is large enough to include the oversized head, and straight and clear--everything I could ask for.

Awesome handle thank you

Very nice handle should last for years and more.

Love it!

I love the feel of the handle. It fits the hand. I love the swell at the end. No way your hand is gonna slip off. Only problem is now I need one for a slightly bigger eye for my Tommy Axe.

32” Straight Handle

Purchased the 32” straight and the grain was perfect, no run out at all. Very high quality handle, will purchase again. Not easy to find a place that makes good quality handles these days. Would recommend Hoffman in a heartbeat.
