Both handles were beautifully shaped with the grain running in proper direction. One is very solid and the other is cracked, hung them both because there’s not enough time left in the season to wait for another handle, well see how they hold up.

Never have seen such a high quality handle, grain was dead straight, vibration is non-existent even without thinning. Pattern and shape are perfected, got it as a model for any future handles I will make. The "hook" and palm swell at the knob belie the kind of craftsman ship and ergonomics that only come from years of experience. It is perfect.
The 28" hickory straight handle is well-suited for this splitting axe with a vintage 3 1/2 lb. S. A. Wetterlings head and easily accommodated the axe head's 13/16 in. max width eye. The walnut wedge looked great. The Grade 2 handle looks nice and did not disappoint when splitting 1/2 cord of hard, freshly cut Bradford pear wood.
